Mazer Rackham

Mazer Rackham was the hero of the second bugger invasion, he is also Ender's teacher. This should be impossible, because the second invasion happened 100 years before, but it's not. Mazer Rackham was put into a ship and sent into space going at a relative speed. By doing this Mazer Rackham is only 8 years older then from the end of the second invasion. Mazer was sent into space to stay alive in order to teach Ender. Mazer is similar to Ender he is always very serious and has a brilliant mind. Mazer understands the buggers better then everyone else. Mazer realizes the connection between the Queen and worker buggers. With Mazer's training Ender is ready to fight the buggers and to lead the humans to victory. 

Peter's Rise to Hegemon

Peter Wiggin is a very bright boy with one ambition gaining power. Peter started planning for his rise when he was still a child. In the book you see the beginning of his plan. Peter gets onto the nets and begins writing. He gains support and is an influential person in society. With this support Peter is able to stop the war on earth after the bugger war. Peter does this by getting nations to agree on a proposal. The proposal is called the Locke proposal in honor of Peters online alias. Even later in the book you learn that Peter becomes Hegemon. Ender writes a Eulogy as the speaker of the dead in honor of his brother. From the clues in the book Peter seems to be a charismatic and good leader who is capable of gaining power. It turns out Peter may not have been as bad as he seemed. In the beginning of the book Peter is almost psychotic but he gets past that and becomes a promising leader.

War Games

At battle school a game is played. Every boy in the school participates in it. The game simulates what battle in null-g would feel like. It helps the children at battle school learn strategy and helps them learn about maneuvering in space. Ender quickly becomes the best soldier the game has ever seen. And because of Ender's skill he becomes a commander. The commanders are in charge of training their army and leading them into battle. As a commander Ender never loses a game. Ender wants to be perfect he realizes that if he cant win the game at school he will never be able to beat the buggers. Ender's drive for perfection is motivational and really shows how much he cares about the world and that he believes it is his duty to save it. Ender's time as a commander shows how strong he his, being able to overcome every obstacle thrown at him and never breaking down. When Ender starts to feel the effects of the challenges he is graduated and went down as the best commander battle school ever had.

The Women in Ender's Life

Ender has two major female influences in his life, Valentine and Petra. Valentine is Enders motivation and drive to do well in Battle School. She protected him as a child and helps be the best he can by teaching him arithmatic. This makes Valentine similar to Petra. Petra protects Ender from Bonzo and teaches him how to shoot while in null-G. I thought this was very coincidental. To help guide Ender through his situation with Bonzo he has Petra to help him. This is very similar to how Ender got through his everyday life with Peter thanks to Valentine. To me this is a big connection.

The Giants Drink

In Ender's Game their is a fantasy game on their desks called the giants drink. In the game a giant offers your player two drinks and no matter what one you pick it kills your character. No one in the history of the school has ever gotten by the giant except Ender. Ender instead of picking a drink he attacked the giant. Ender continued through the game and got to an area in the game labeled the end of the world. He finds a castle with a mirror and a rug. Ender after he defeats the Buggers goes to colonize their planet. He finds an area that looks exactly like the area in the fantasy game. The Buggers found a way to communicate with Ender through the game and through his dreams. The buggers show deeper intellect then humans by being able to sense Ender and his love for his enemies and to be able to communicate with him through thoughts and images.

Bonzo the Bully

Bonzo Madrid is commander of salamander army. He is bigger and stronger then a lot of the kids at battle school but he is not a good commander. He refuses to let Ender participate in practices and refuses to let Ender fire his laser during battle. Bonzo's major weakness is his spanish pride. Bonzo hates it if anything makes him seem inferior to anyone else. Ender hurts Bonzo's pride when yelling at Major Anderson for cheating poorly at the game. Ender has his smallest soldier named Bean tell Bonzo and his entire army what they should have done. Bonzo doesn't take the criticism well and plans to kill Ender. Bonzo fights Ender in the shower. Bonzo loses the fight and his life. I do not understand how he can be so cruel and take no criticism or any sort of advice with out taking offense. He causes his army to lose many matches and he causes himself to die over his pride. Personally i think Bonzo is a baby if his pride is so sensitive he feels murder is the best solution for embarrassment. I LIKE COLORS

Buggers: What are they?

Throughout the book little information about the buggers is presented. Even after their defeat and Ender is living on their world they still know almost nothing. They have learned that buggers dont have language they dont even communicate. Queens control everything through thought. Ender does learn the Buggers were sorry for what they had done but it was too late. The buggers were also more advanced then the humans they had learned to manipulate gravity and light and were able to rely information istantly. However without communication buggers have not had the ability to think individually. I believe this is what lead the buggers to defeat. Without having many individuals thinking of solutions only the queen can come up with the answers and she can only focus on one thing at a time. This has given Ender an advantage throughout his battles with the buggers. Ender has is most trusted friends from battle school by his side ready to fight and improvise when neccesary.

Ender the Perfect Mixture

Valentine and Peter Wiggin are complete opposites. Valentine is kind and caring, and Peter is cruel and deceiving. Ender is a perfect balance of them both. Like Valentine he is kind and is able to love which allows him to understand his adversary's, but he is also able to manipulate his opponents with his deeper understanding of their tendencies. It makes him the perfect soldier. Ender however doesn't like being like his brother Peter at all. i understand why he wouldn't want to be like Peter, but Ender should realize what he shares with Peter has only made him better.

Language at Battle School

The boys at battle school are the best of the best. Some of the best thinkers and strategist, but when they speak it sounds broken. For example "You not anybody till you gots you first kill."(47) The boys take out words they deem unnecessary and make their slang sound simplistic. I don't understand why these children who are so bright talk like they do. They are just children, but even now, in present time ,children as old as Ender speak more grammatically correct compared to the kids at battle school. 

TKAM Movie reflection 2

The end of the movie we watched today was very accurate to the book. Jem and Scout got attacked by Bob Ewell. Arthur "Boo" Radely saved them. Some of the many other changes from the book throughout the movie were necessary or did not make a difference to the telling of the story. However for this portion of the movie no change was needed or necessary. The scene was almost perfect. The only part I did not like that was removed was when Boo spoke. When he speaks it shows how he is still a child on the inside and is someone broken. Robert Duvall did a good job having a child like attitude and pose without words, but in my opinion hearing him ask to be walked home shows he is a child who is scared.

TKAM- Courtroom Case

After watching To Kill a Mockingbird today the main point that stuck out to me was all the differences. I was surprised to see that so many characters and scenes were taken out. This is understood with movies that have been made about books, but some very vital scenes have been eliminated. For instance the removal of the scene when the Ewell family is introduced makes it much harder to understand the motives and the backgroud of their family.
